Yes, you should only be considering sounds that are mastered at Age 3. Yes, for FCD you should only be considering the sounds that exist in Spanish in the final position SNRLD. You can get the full story in the 46 page e-book Developmental Speech and Language Norms for Spanish and English. Make sure you download the recent copy from our evaluation resources page – Articulation Norms for Spanish and English. But based on the work of Crowe and McLeod (2018, 2020) there are new norms that are at those younger ages. Hi Alexa, You are right that the old developmental articulation norms DID NOT reflect those sounds by the young ages. I’d also be interested in whether this would impact best practice in terms of how particular aspects of instruction in morphology and literacy skills are presented based on native dialect. While I would imagine that FCD as a result of a phonological disorder would still impact intelligibility in Caribbean Spanish, as final consonants are produced in some situations, it’d be interesting to examine whether the impact was as significant as in other dialects. My hypothesis would be that even if children who present with phonological disorders produce similar errors across dialects, failing to reference the dialect of each individual could lead to erroneous over-identification of phonological disorders in children whose speech is dialectically correct. Puerto Rican Spanish (Goldstein, 2005) however, as I only have access to the abstract, I’m not sure exactly how errors were classified/ measured across dialects. Interestingly, I did find a study from 2005 that did not find significant differences between speech productions of children with phonological disorders who spoke Mexican Spanish vs. In the Northeastern U.S., Caribbean dialects of Spanish are significantly more common than Central/ South American or European dialects, so this is a particularly salient distinction here. Some of these variations (particularly weak syllable deletion) might be considered “informal” even within the Caribbean, but are often still the norm in conversational speech. For example, in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, it’s dialectically correct to delete medial “d” (ð or ð̞ in many other dialects), delete the /s/ in /s/ clusters, delete final consonants (particularly /s/ and /d/), and in some cases, delete weak syllables entirely. It’s of course also extremely important to consider regional/ dialectical variations for Spanish-speaking children. Make sure you are selecting the right goals or you will be spinning your therapeutic wheels. This means that when these sounds are knocked out it can drastically reduce intelligibility for language and speech reasons. It can denote an infinitive verb (/r/ comer/to eat), plurality like English (tacos), or a verb tense (estás, están). ![]() When Spanish uses a final consonant it usually carries heavy linguistic weight. The word snarled is a great way to remember this.Ģ. Spanish only uses 5 final consonants: S, N, R, L, & D. Worse yet, unvoiced final consonants and clusters can’t be heard by a Spanish speaker until they develop an ear for it (Don’t = Don). When a Spanish speaker tries to produce a final consonant in English that cannot occur in final position in Spanish, errors are common. English has a ton of final consonants and Spanish does not. ![]() One of the most common misdiagnoses we see for children coming from Spanish-speaking backgrounds is a diagnosis of speech impairment for final consonant deletion (FCD). Surprising violence occurs, and inappropriate jokes are told, all in contrast to the childlike visuals, and it quickly made me a fan. The big bad, Meavora, is introduced in such a dark and comically evil way that I both gasped and laughed out loud. The aesthetic also betrays what is, at times, a surprisingly dark tone. The character design is reminiscent of an animated children’s TV show, but the movement, especially small detailed animations like close-ups of hands, are fantastic. The story follows the titular Tchia and the adventure to save her kidnapped father. ![]() You explore a magical, fictionalized archipelago heavily inspired by New Caledonia and its traditions. Tchia begins with a note from the developer outlining exactly what it is trying to do, and it does a great job setting up the world and tone of the experience. If, however, you do want to engage in what Tchia has to offer, there is a unique package wrapped up with some well-executed gameplay mechanics that are fun to do throughout the entirety of the relatively short but fulfilling experience. Want to skip this entire gameplay section? There’s an option in the menu to do just that. Don’t feel like taking your boat? Soul-jump into a bird and just fly to your destination. Don’t want to do the rock stacking minigame? Move along. Don’t want to play the rhythm game that accompanies cutscenes? Just press the left control stick to make it auto-play. In some ways, Tchia eschews the idea of making you do anything by offering an open, exploration-based game filled with activities where, in nearly every case, completing them is optional. How refreshing to find an open-world title which understands pacing, respects players' patience, and doesn't use cheap tricks to pad its runtime.Video games, unfairly simplified, all present a series of virtual tasks that must be performed for progress, and the player must decide if they enjoy doing those tasks. However, the main narrative is brisk enough that it doesn't wear out its welcome. The islands have plenty of activities to sustain players who want to stay longer and get more bang for their buck. That's not to say that the world is empty. Remember that side missions and enemy camps are optional. The main campaign lasts five to ten hours. Thankfully, that's not a problem with Tchia. This hinders the experience and makes the title seem bloated. By the time players get to the end, they've spent anywhere from thirty to sixty hours. A lot of these are forced on fans, either for story or grinding purposes. They're brimming with miscellaneous characters, all of whom have menial tasks for the hero to complete. ![]() Open-world games usually pack their playtimes full to bursting. Rather, fans can just embrace the spirit of adventure. Not to mention, skirmishes are infrequent, as conquering camps isn't required to complete the story. Even then, these scenarios are more about problem-solving than button-mashing. Later, they can summon an entity to shoot fireballs. To dispatch hostiles, players must rely on explosive items. The game has no designated attack button. Combat takes a backseat to puzzles and exploration. ![]() That's why Tchia takes as little as possible from said formula. The formula is easy to grasp and painfully trite at points. The heroes defeat some bad guys to unlock new attacks, thus allowing them to kill more bad guys. It's a transparent means of grinding and padding. Players clear said forts to liberate the corresponding regions. The main story often sees the protagonist annihilate entire armies, and the remainders organize themselves into camps or forts. Fighting enemies is a staple of video games, so it's not surprising that open-world games populate their zones with thugs. ![]() |
